Old Stone Mill NHS - The Delta Mill Society

Special Funding Appeal for the Old Stone Mill

We are looking for 40 or more special friends of the Old Stone Mill in Delta to meet an immediate funding challenge that has arisen this spring.

Four of our 2014 students. We need your help to keep their smiling faces greeting visitors for the full 2014 season.
We have a major challenge. This summer we hired five students for 13 weeks. We were then told that this year one of the federal grantees would only fund seven weeks of employment per student. We have a six-week shortfall!

We feel we are committed to these students and so are trying to find at least 40 special friends (more would be nice) who will donate $100 each to enable us to continue our student employment to the end of the summer.

The Old Stone Mill is a unique aspect of our local and national cultural heritage. It is the oldest operating stone gristmill in Ontario and, as such, has been designated as a National Historic Site. It is a valuable cultural and economic asset in the community, drawing many tourists to the area. But we could not do it without the students.

Each year, we hire as many summer students as we can afford, usually through federal grants. These students are invaluable. They act as energetic interpreters and guides and provide essential support for the milling operations. They also undertake minor repairs and maintenance on the buildings. This year, we hired five young men and women, three of which are in or planning to enter museum studies.

Each donor would be eligible for the draw of a John Shea original artwork. A renowned local artist, John has agreed to provide a special painting of the Old Stone Mill to be raffled among the donors. John’s work can be seen at www.john-shea.artistwebsites.com. Each donor would also receive a full tax receipt.

If you can be one of our “special friends”, please visit our website at www.deltamill.org and go to the donors page or send a cheque to The Delta Mill Society, Box 172, Delta K0E 1G0. Thank you!
